This workshop is designed to help students work on writing a Social Sciences Essay in English and will last 3 hours. This workshop will be limited to a maximum of 5 students for each proctor to ensure that everyone receives quality feedback. The goal is not only to introduce the framework of a Social Sciences essay, but to give students the opportunity to work with the ideas introduced, apply them to their own work, as well as provide and receive feedback. Students will be expected to prepare for the workshop by either bringing their own work or research in printed or electronic form. It will start by briefly outlining the preliminary research required, then it will get into how the essay should be planned and structured before a bulk of the writing occurs (thesis, main arguments, supporting evidence, etc.,) then finally will delve into writing and review. From there, participants will be given 30-40 minutes to apply the concepts introduced to their respective topics. Students will use the research that they’ve gathered to create an introduction to the essay which will include a thesis statement, main arguments and supporting evidence. Students will be encouraged to work collaboratively throughout the process and the proctors will monitor progress and help guide the process along the way. Finally, after this working session the workshop will dedicate 15-20 minutes to sharing, reviewing, and if time allows, reworking. In this phase, everyone will verbally share what they’ve written and peers will share their thoughts starting with positives and then diving into areas of opportunity. Once everyone has had the chance to present and receive feedback, the workshop will conclude.
